Episode 1: Michelle Jackson
This week’s conversation is with Michelle Jackson, a Smith College alum from the class of 2015. Michelle majored in Biological Sciences and minored in Environmental Science & Policy. Michelle is a first generation student, received a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, and was a peer mentor for the AEMES program at Smith. Michelle spent several years working in Jesse Bellemare’s lab, culminating in an honors thesis focusing on bryophytes. Michelle’s fondness for bryophytes led her to the doctoral program at Duke University. Ultimately, Duke was not the right fit for her, which led her to leave with a Master’s Degree. She returned to Western Mass and just started her doctoral work at UMass Amherst.
Get caught up with Michelle’s pathway through academia and hear her advice for any students who are currently deciphering whether or not they should apply to graduate school.
Fun fact: Michelle’s cat has its own instagram page @kylaneb
